A documentary portrait of three queer men who are reimagining the traditional barbershop.
Devan Shimoyama is a Black American artist fast on the rise, whose barbershop painting series draws upon Afrofuturism and drag to envision the Black barbershop as a more inclusive space. He recounts experiences shared by many queer, BIPOC individuals—being turned away from predominately-white barbershops while, at the same time, feeling like he must ‘go back into the closet’ in Black barbershops.
Jessie Anderson, a transgender barber in Vancouver, Canada, is the founder of Big Bro’s Barbershop, a safe community space for transgender and gender nonconforming individuals and their allies. Jessie opens the doors of Big Bro’s Barbershop to viewers, modeling how Devan’s hopes for more inclusive barbershop spaces are already being realized.
Richard Savvy, Australia’s ‘naked barber,’ is a fetish barber/porn actor. The former ‘Sydney Mr. Leather’ invites you to leave your shame and clothes at the door and add the transformative power of kink to your cut.
Devan, Jessie, Richard, and their community of friends, clients, and collaborators vivify the spectrum of cis-, trans-, and nongender identifications, races and ethnicities, sexual orientations, and national origins. Their special approach to barbering models new possibilities for social inclusion and personal freedom.
