In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter,” Sherlock Holmes is revealed to have a brother, Mycroft, who asks Holmes to assist a friend from his club. The man, Melas, a greek interpreter, has witnessed the apparent imprisonment of a Greek man named Kratides, being held in a country estate outside of London. Having gleaned some clues as a result of his captors ignorance of the language, Melas presents his case to Holmes.
