In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Adventure of the Yellow Face, Mr. Grant Munro hires Sherlock Holmes to investigate the strange behavior of his wife Effie, late of America, who has recently asked Munro for a hundred pounds and no questions asked. The plot thickens when he catches her visiting a cottage near their house occupied by a yellow-faced stranger who quickly disappears. First published in 1893 this story is notable for its comparatively liberal treatment of the subject of interracial marriage and for a rare error in deduction by the super sleuth Holmes.
