In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Adventure of the Cardboard Box, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are enlisted by a Miss Susan Cushing to investigate a package sent to her containing two human ears packed in salt. Could this be a prank committed by three medical students Miss Cushing recently evicted? Or is the gruesome package the result of a more sinister act? This story was omitted from the American edition of the Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes as the subject of infidelity was thought to be too indecent at the time of publication.
