In “The Adventure of Silver Blaze, Holmes and Dr. Watson investigate the disappearance of a racehorse and the murder of its trainer. The stable boy on duty, having been drugged was unable to provide any account of the crime, but then there is “the curious incident of the dog in the night-time:” namely, why didn’t the dog bark when a stranger entered the tent? One of Doyle’s favorite Holmes’ mysteries, it is suffused with the sporting atmosphere of the late Victorian era.
