In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “Bernice Bobs Her Hair,” (1920) a dowdy girl from Wisconsin visits her sophisticated cousin Marjorie. Marjorie, complaining that Bernice is “socially hopeless”, starts to tutor her cousin. When Bernice suddenly becomes more attractive to the local boys than Marjorie, jealousy creates friction between the debutantes. Based on letters Fitzgerald wrote to his younger sister, Annabel, the story was first published in the Saturday Evening Post on May 1st, 1920, and was included in the short story collection “Flappers and Philosophers”.
