The Scriptures can be the inspired word of God and a puzzle, all at the same time. Even for Christians, questions arise about appropriate roles of women as described in the Bible: for example, Wives be subordinate to your husbands (Col 3:18) and women should keep silent in the churches, for they are not allowed to speak (1 Cor 14:34). Commands such as Slaves, be obedient to your human masters (Eph 6:5) or Call no one on earth your father (Matt 23:9) can be challenging. Other perplexing passages appear to portray Jesus in a negative light, for instance in Mark 7:27 when Jesus calls the Syrophoenician woman a dog or when God kills most of humanity in a flood (Gen 6-8).
